Dear student,

I would like to welcome you to the math class! I strongly believe that you will succeed in Mathematics this year. The most significant factor contributing to your success will be your willingness to work on math outside of class on a regular basis. If you have good study habits and fair math foundations, you will not have any difficulties in my class.

We will use calculators regularly during the year.
Using technology is a necessary skill you need for your future. I would like you to keep in mind that calculators, computers and other technology are only tools that perform operations they are asked to do. You must always stay in full command of technology.

Your grade in Mathematics will be determined by the number of points you accumulate on your tests, quizzes, lab reports, and homework.

Tests

There are usually four tests each semester. The questions are similar to - but not identical to - the assignments you completed on your homework or during the class time. Tests can not be retaken.

Homework

Homework may not be collected, but you are expected to do it. Solutions to all assigned problems are presented in class by students selected at random. Short pop-quizzes on the material assigned for homework will show how you prepared for class. Each quiz consists of three or four questions taken verbatim from your homework assignments. If you have exerted yourself as you should, and have listened to the discussions as problems were presented, these quizzes are a really good way to raise your marking period grade.

Quizzes

There are usually two announced and several unannounced quizzes for each chapter during the marking period. There is no expectation that all quizzes will be done extremely well. However, going over them is a good learning experience in which you (and entire class) have the opportunity to benefit from mistakes. You will be given the opportunity to drop two of the lowest scores.

Lab Reports or Projects

Lab Reports or Projects are expected to be submitted on time. They will be graded on the basis how well you can formulate the problem or will address the questions raised in lab-instruction sheet.

Extra Credit

From time to time some problems or projects will be posted as extra credit. In order to get an extra credit assignment you must complete all homework and submit all regular assignment on time.

Additional information

There is no chance to predict all outcomes in advance. What I can guarantee is to be positive, constructive and flexible. I would expect the same from you.
