Assessment Policy
Methods of Assessment:
(for regular classes)
Homework Notebooks
I will collect and review your full collection of homework periodically.
I will look for overall completeness, completeness added to your solutions based on class discussion, organization.
Hand-Ins
Homework problems which are announced, checked online at least twice a week.
Participation
A commitment to follow through on your responsibility to each class - if not with complete solutions to each problem then questions about the problems. That you are open to assisting classmates in arriving at clear solutions, and that you have the confidence to look to your peers for clarification or edification. Online participation is highly encouraged.
Journals
A collection of your classmates and homework reflections on the major definitions, course and techniques of the course.
In-classes
Problem sets done during a class period, often a "fat block". Journals may be used as a resource; an opportunity will be given to respond to my initial comments. Answers are not sufficient for an honors grade, commentary is expected on each problem. Efficiency in approach and effectiveness of presentation are factored into the grade.
Quizzes
Given occasionally (often online) to make certain that routine techniques and skills are understood. Journals may -not be used on quizzes. These are short, designed to take ten minutes or so of class time.
Portfolios
An organized folder of all papers for which you have received a grade or written feedback from me. At the midterm and end-of-term, I will request a written self-evaluation of your portfolio in which you will comment on your performance and progress over the current term.
